Hello!

I found this today on an old homesite in the woods. The only remainder of the site is the terra-cotta well. I found it at around 8" and it was directly under a large root. I had to dig both sides of the root and scoop it out from underneath. It is made of copper, has a slot for a ribbon of some sort, and is about the size of a half-dollar. On one side it has a pic of some men on horses, one looks like he has a rifle. Possibly calvary men? The site is a few hundred yards from a bridge that was erected for transporting civil war prisoners across a river in my town. The other side says "CHILDRENS FOVNDERS ROLL COMMEMORATING THE HEROIC PEOPLE OF THE CONFEDERACY". Sorry the pic isn't the greatest....first time posting a pic online.

Looks like the back of an old pocket watch there. As far as that medal or FOB goes, WOW. Could be you just paid for your detector. Gotta have someone with confederate token experience check it out. Congrats, nice digs!

Thanks! I hope you're right!

Yep, it's the back of a pocket watch next to the item in question. It's just copper with silver plating from what I can tell. Found a couple of old shotgun shell brasses too, and my friend (who also found the pocketwatch...with my old micronta I might add) also found a pistol. Bullets intact, even one in the chamber. It wasn't very old though. I figure someone chucked it in the woods as they were driving down the road. It's a rough backwoods muddy dirt road.

I think I might have a good site...but I'm going to have to clean up...maybe use a push mower or something. The place is in the woods and the brush and vines make it hard to cover any area. Today we just walked around poking the detectors in any spots we could.

Thanks Buckram!

I actually found a pic online of one that was for the stone mtn carving, but it wasn't octagonal and it had a different inscription. I guess there were more than one version of this thing?
