Found this in a field where I've found dozens of sharps variants -- I put one next to it for size reference. Definitely brass. I thought it might be something like a corps badge but I can't find anything like it on the forums/internet.

Any ideas?

Its not a corps badge, all the Union badges are well documented. We frequently find brass misc. stuff in camps. Sometimes I never find out what they are.

that's for sure, smokeythecat -- if it wasn't at a place where i had found so much military stuff I would just write it off as a piece of furniture or something but thought it was worth seeing if it was familiar to anybody

It looks like it may be part of a larger piece. Please post a picture of the bottom showing what I think is a break. And, I hope you don't mind but I cropped your picture to show the item a little better. I get the feeling it might be Pennsylvania related due to the Keystone shape incorporated into the device.

I'm not a US Civil War expert, but this looks to be earlier then c1850 - 60. :icon_scratch:
To me it looks more likely to be from the late-Georgian to early-Victorian Period c1820 - 40.

Based on it's small size, possibly case or mantle clock decoration, maybe a fleur-de-lis?

Good point... Don't limit your thinking to Civil War only. If it was a good campsite in 1860 it was a good campsite long before that.

It may be a piece off an earlier long rifle.

This one was made in Bucks County PA.

Looks like it came off a piece of 18th C Furniture to me.
