Hello,

We found some rocks today and we would like to know what kind they are. They were found in Madison County, Southwest Montana. Also, is there a good identification book for beginners, preferably with some good pictures? Thanks!

The are many books on rocks, minerals and gems but I would recommend "The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Rocks and Minerals"! It contains lots of photos as well as information and compositions of the rocks, minerals and gems and also includes locations where they are found.

:hello: Welcome to TNET, landsnorkler!

Looks like quartz, but if you in the southwestern part of Montana, I would keep my eye out for any of that quartz with gold in it. There is a lot of history of gold mining in that part of Mt. Good luck in your prospecting, but you may have to wait till spring.
