Haven't been able to get permission on the sites I wanted to hunt so I went to some secondary sites and found a few things. Two weeks ago, after striking out on two permission requests, I went to this old log cabin that I pounded pretty hard over the last 3 years. It has given up 6 colonial coppers, one each of the following: KG II, KG III, Virginia Halfpenny, New Jersey, Vermont, and Connecticut. I put a couple hours in here hoping for another colonial coin. Nothing Colonial this time, but I did find a cute little lock and a nice gilt flower button with an Ives Scott & Co backmark which dates it to 1834 - 1836.

This weekend I went to a couple places and turned up a nice little key, a smooth copper, a large caliber musketball, a neat coal tag, and a nice token with Mt.P.B.CO. which I think stands for Mount Pleasant (PA) Bottling Co. I also found one of these oval pieces with two holes. I have heard they went on saddles, but I will not be 100% conviced of that until I see a Colonial saddle with one of these on it.

Nice finds Steve, I love the old house. That place has been good to you if you are still pulling finds like that. As for the oval piece, they have been the subject of long discussion. Some say they were used on saddles but I think the best answer is in Buckleboys thread. It's long and drawn out but some good information.

I really like the little lock. I found one like it last year. Yours is in a little better shape than mine. The shackle is completely worn through on mine.

Thanks for a great post and good luck on your next hunt. :icon_thumright:

Randy,

Thanks for the link to that old thread on the oval pieces. I have dug a number of them over the years. I also enjoyed the link to Alonzo Lepley's gun parts from Somerset County, PA. Some of the relics in my post were actually dug in Somerset County this past weekend. Yes, I have always felt that those brass brackets were used in conjunction with the oval pieces. Here is a pic I took of some mine years ago. Mine have all come from sites that dated between 1770 and 1820.

That's the way to do it, Steve. I can see a King George III bust on that copper. I am definitely loving that Colonial pottery. ;D Giddy up to that Colonial cabin!

Kirk :hello:

Steve - I remember you hunting there as the old building looked familiar. That site was good to you in the copper dep't for sure. Looks like you dug a nice assortment of interesting finds at the 2 sites. With the weather holding out you should be able to keep hunting for a good while. Won't hurt my feelings if winter passed us by this year. See ya ..... Bill

That is one cool cabin.. Great finds... Keep pounding it.. Sorry I missed if you said what the cabin dated back to?? Thanks for the look..
