Some of today's finds

I got permission on yet another site today. The lady who lives there says when she moved there, she was only 7 (she's in her 80's now). She said there was a house on the property that was very very old even when she was 7. I detected the site for 1 1/2 hrs. Lots of iron and false signals, but I managed to pick out a few solid hits.

The big chrome round thing is either a radiator cap or hubcap for an old pontiac.
The rectangle brass/copper item has a large letter "T" on it, and says high school under it.
The gold (brass?) round piece has decoration on top and bottom, a hinge spot, and a spot for a fingernail to open it, and has "Helena Rubenstein" stamped along the rim. I'm guessing it may have been a lockett cover? Could it be gold? It has a bit of a tarnish look, but it is much cleaner than any other brass I found there, and has no buildup or green on it like the other brass I found.
There is also a lead/pewter wing from a bird, a metal clorox cap, buckle, large rimfire bullet case, 1969 mem cent, 2 zinc mason lids, some kind of knob, and a pharmacist sign. The sign was from another site, but included it anyway.

Re: Some of today's finds

Cool, I was going to plug the name into a search engine tonight, but you beat me to it! Thanks for the info!

Re: Some of today's finds

Cheese, I may need to get a new monitor as pics. aren't as light as the shop's laptop but the large round "radiator cap or hubcap" looks a lot like a zinc mason jar lid with a porcelin insert. ???

Re: Some of today's finds

Down at the lower right? You need a new monitor, lol ;D It shows up pretty clear on mine anyway.

It is chrome, and says pontiac. The chrome is over either brass or copper, and there is remnants of a rusted iron ring on the back side. There are 2 zinc mason jar lids at the top of the pic.

Re: Some of today's finds

Looks like a great relic hunt. Like that old RX plate. Good digs!

Re: Some of today's finds

Thanks! I'm amazed that it's in such good shape. It came from a different site than the rest of the stuff in the pic, but it's from the same site as the powder flask piece that I posted in the metal detecting forum. I have gotten permission on so many sites lately that I haven't really hunted any of them hard. My thinking is: hit each one a bit, and hit every new one I get asap until I find a sweet spot. I think the spot where this stuff came from is probably a good one to search a bit harder.

Any thoughts on the rimfire cartridge case? I have one identical to it that someone gave me, along with some other items from a civil war site. It is fat, like maybe .45 caliber? How long ago were large caliber bullets like this made in a rimfire cartridge? It has a "U" stamped on the end.

My inspiration is the thought of finding an old coin, but some of the relics I'm finding are neat enough to satisfy me until the silver stuff finally makes a show.

Re: Some of today's finds

Great finds!
I just found 6 of the zinc lids in my crawlspace, they still look brand new... ;D
The Pontiac thingy, looks like it's probably a hub cap, ( Center cap ), should have a bueaty ring to it...
Also, The reason the RX sign is probably in such good shape, it looks like it maybe porcelin covered insted of being painted...
A collector of such, would probably love to have it,,, even with the minner chips...
I have an old porcelin covered lience plate, and they tell me it's worth about $100.
Sheeew,, must be long winded today...
Anyway nice digs,,, looks like you have some great sites there, keep us posted...

Re: Some of today's finds

:) Nice work,Looks like that site will bring many more great finds.HH

Re: Some of today's finds

Cheese, the 44 rimfire was made for the old Henry lever action from 1860 till maybe 1873

Re: Some of today's finds

Thanks for the ID on the bullet. So that puts this site at a pretty good age.

Leon,

I thought it was porcelain too at first, but it's just paint. (wish it was porcelain).

The cap (radiator or hub) is only about 3 1/2" across, and has what looks like might be rubber (hard and brittle now) under it, like a radiator cap would have. I thought about the old cars with the radiator cap sticking right up above the peak in the hood. Maybe? Another thought is it could possibly be a horn button.

Re: Some of today's finds

What ever the cap is,,, it's a metal car part, thats got to be getting rare ;D

Re: Some of today's finds

The thing though Cheese is that they are making the 44 rimfire cart. for cowboy action shooting. That's just when they started making the cartriges.

Re: Some of today's finds

Excellent finds. similar to what I am finding at my granparents property settled in 1901.
