Hi all,

I can usually find something to help me figure out things I pull out of the ground. When I search in the UK, the time span is so great and the types of things sometimes gets overwhelming. This is one of those things.

I search around Colchester with the Hunting Club and their website has a wealth of information about finds. I can find what I think is a match on their site but nothing else on the web. So I am including a picture of the item from the Colchester Hunting Club site as well as a picture of what I found.

They are all lead and have hand-chased markings. The Colchester site says it is an early face Papal Bulla seal. I don't know.

Anybody seen them and know what they are and when/how they were used?

Thanks,

Daryl

Thanks Hammered. I have been to all those links and seen the one posted by Shaun. All of them have faces on them and most have writing on them. The ones I found have nothing but chased decoration like the one shown on the Colchester Hunting Club site as an "Early Face." Nothing but design. That's what I can't find any references for.

Hi Silver Searcher,

Yes. The picture with the yellow background is from the Colchester Hunting Club site. They call them both the same thing. I am trying to figure out Papal seals (which I think the one on the right on the Colchester site is) from a badge. Since they call them the same, I can't figure it out.

So did seals always have the faces and there is no seal that is the "Early" design and still a Bulla seal?

Well Daryl Pilgrims Badges also have faces, The Bulla Seal(Papal) are more of a official seal associated with the Catholic Church, Pilgrims badges were sold as souvenir pieces...The seal would have been used by the person it represented. On official Church business.

Thanks Silver Searcher.

So what are the ones with no faces and just chased designs? When you examine it, you can see where there was something between the two pieces (front and back) and it is torn apart to get it free.

So the one on the Colchester site with no face or writing and the ones I found that have only design and no faces or writing would be??

Thanks,

Daryl

Would be a Pigrims Pin Badge, and later than the bulla seals :icon_thumleft:, I think the two are getting confused with each outher.

Me too. Do you have any references for Pilgrim Pin Badges with just designs. I've only seen them that have figures, scenes, or something. Never ones without something.
