During the Kuang-hsu period the first machine made cash coins of China were struck. They were struck in a very yellow brass, and tend to be very well made, but do not appear to have been too popular as they are normally seen with very little wear on them, showing they did not circulate widely. I' guessing the reverse of your Chinese coin looks like this:

If so, it is from the Kwangtung mint generally from between 1890 and 1908[FONT=Arial, Century Gothic, sans-serif].

Great finds MrJohn. If you are hunting via a "team" - do you all share the findings or each member of the "team" keep what they find?

After a little research I found out that the Chinese coin I found was minted under Kuang Hsu T'ung Pao in the Kwangtung province, it is worth one cash and was minted between 1875 and 1908.

they were carried as gook luck - did not have any real value in this area
