Re: Some New Pictures Of My Frog I'm Carving

Thanks guys.

Greg, the material is Ohio Pipestone which is found really close to my house in outcropping that were exposed by some logging. I've always known it was there, I just never took the time to go see if I could find any until they logged the area and exposed it. I have also done a Turtle and a Buffalo.

Here's some pics of those.

Those are incredible. The blending of the colors of that stone on that frog is great. You ought to make a pipe. Just be sure to sign the bottom!!!!
Nice work. Dremmel?

Veeerrryyy nice Dorkfish (I'm sorry, that handle just seems...inappropriate) for one with such abilities.
Those figures (your work) are/is impressive.
Can we see a pic of the raw pipestone? Love to see the before and after pics.

Thanks guys and gals for all your comments.

Yes, I do use a Dremel Tool. You can do these by hand if you soak the stone for a little while to soften it up, but it's much easier to use the Dremel.

No, I don't sell my pieces. I do them for myself.

It takes about 10 to 15 hours on each one, but I spread that out over a couple or three weeks. I usually just work on these while I'm at work because it really makes a mess with all the dust. The job I have has a lot of down time and I can set right outside my office and work on these and not worry about the dust getting all over everything.

Here's a picture of a raw piece of stone that I used for the Buffalo and a couple pictures or right after I started working on it.

That is cool. Pipestone? Portsmouth deposit? What tools are you working with? Very attractive piece.

I am using a battery powered Dremel Tool. I use the sanding pads to get the rough shape and to smooth it some and then I use the various sizes of cutting tools to do the detail work. I then polish them with the polishing tools that come with the Dremel and then I rub them down with my skins oils to darken, seal, and preserve the stone.

Cool talent. The effigy of choice in this area seemed to have been the peleated woodpecker. Keep us posted when you finish and make new things.
