I went back to my dig site yesterday and dug for about 3 1/2 hours. I didn't do great, but I did manage to find a few trayable pieces. I found 4 pieces of cut and worked Deer Antler and two of those had the bases drilled out for hafting and were more than likely Arrowpoints. I found two crude points and two tips. I also found 3 Bone Beads, 2 complete and one broken, a round Pottery piece that looks like a plug of some kind and a broken Pipe. Like I said, not great, but at least I didn't leave empty handed.

1st picture - The days haul

2nd picture - The two Deer Antler Arrowpoints showing the drilled out bases.

3rd picture - The best Bone Bead

The last few pictures are of the piece of Pipe I found. It is made from grey Ohio Pipestone and would have been a killer piece if whole. I believe the part I have is a piece of the bowl. If you look at the drilling you can see that the hole narrows on the smaller part leading me to believe that would have been the stem end.

Great finds DF.

There's not many bone or antler tools found around the places I search. I'm envious of your finds.

Nice.. what would that have looked like whole?

Jazdo, probably something like this one only most of the Ft Ancient Pipes from this site have a shorter stem.

Nice finds, Steve. I was especially interested in seeing the internal view of the pipe bowl and stem. Thanks.

How did they drill holes through hardstone? I am totally --deleted-- and need edumacating!!!

Steve, on some pieces they would use a piece of reed filled with sand and by turning the reed the sand would help drill a perfectly round hole. They also used flint drills to drill these out as well. My guess is they would drill out the stems and the bowls before they would shape the piece to the final product to keep it from breaking through.
