So we were digging again today (still no detector...working on it) and we found this stuff in our back yard. I am not exactly sure what most of it is, but it is interesting. The broach looking thing doesnot seem to be silver or of any value. I am more interested in teh clamp looking item we found. Not sure what it is but it is rusted shut...Any thoughts or comments? Let me know. Good luck all!

I never thought of that...notary stamp. that is cool. Now how do i get the rust off to check the plate (if it has one) to see who's it was? You rock Nick, and everyone who donates their time to educate me..thank you. This is why I came here. I am a rookie to this stuff, so I could find the worlds rarest coin and spend it on change for a beer.

I would say pliers also, maybe for handling something hot. Wooden handles rotted away...

Cool finds! 8)

The bottom seal portion of the stamp is most likely made brass and lead. Can probably be rehabilitated. I have several that I was required to have for embossing blueprints years ago, and are now replaced with a rubber stamp. Seals were used extensively for sealing documents and placing addresses on envelopes, however, they were used by any number of business types and not just by Notary's.

I'd give it a good soak using naval jelly or other chemical rust remover, but extremely skeptical about using electrolysis.

The bell on the ring looks like it may have come from a cat or small dog collar.

The pliers are just that, pliers. They are still used today, and are commonly called "snap ring pliers".
They are for the installation and removal of keeper rings on shafts and bearings. The ring will fit into a groove
and will prevent something from sliding or moving.
