Some kinda brass/copper ornate antique thingy

Any suggestions? It's about 3.5" long, heavy maybe copper/brass and definitely old school antique. The back plate is held on by bent 'tangs' and looks to be copper. Thought I'd throw it out there for fun and get some ideas.

Almost looks like a mail slot but too small. Maybe the removable center held apt numbers?

Hate to sound morbid, but it reminds me of name plates they used to put on caskets way back when. Is there a cemetery or funeral home nearby?
