found at my in-laws' cabin yesterday in the backyard, four inches underground. the cabin was built in the 50's and is two blocks from the ocean. metal appears to be either zinc or aluminum, leaning more towards zinc since my chrome trowel made some scratches in it very easily while digging.

It may be one of the plates that go inside a box type battery.

that sounds about right, seeing as how I found it about a foot away from the edge of the patio it makes sense that the bbq might have been around there. I cleaned it up today and it appears to be aluminum, as zinc would have been disintegrated by the brass wire wheel. I will have to test it tomorrow with the hardness/alloy detector to say for sure
