Today I was hunting at an old school site circa 1890's. I got a strong dime singnal ( 3/28 ) at 12 inches.. thinking it was going to be another soda can i reluctantly dug it.

it is some kind of a stamp. The first two pictures are the item as it looks to the eye. The third picture i flipped and rotated so you can read the words.

Any ideas what clothing co this is from.?? What it was used to mark?

You have some old fashioned type used in a printing press. The type was cast from a lead alloy and pressed on the paoper with ink on the type. There are still a few of these presses in operation. Its slow and the type normally has to be set by hand. Sometimes if it were an adv. for a national company, they would send the printer a mold and the lead was cast into the mold to make a plate. (that looks like what you might have.)

Yeap, I've had quite a few individual letters & pieces of mould like this. Printed on paper & seem to be for an advertising leaflet.

Very interesting find! I found a large piece with a story about Henry Ford and one advertising National biskits and peaches. WTG

I found some in the UK. If it is lead and the lettering reversed, it is from a printing press plate. If you could ink it and roll a piece of paper on it to get the impression, it makes a good addition to a display of your finds.
