I just got back from a site in west central Mississippi plate01.JPGplate02.JPGthat has yielded civil war artifacts and I found this brass plate. It measures 2 inches x 1.5 inches and has no design on it.
On the back, it appears to have been soldered.
Any ideas???

At first look it reminds me of a plate used in Rev war. Smokeythecat found one right in front of me LOL. Someone will have some info. NIce find Congrats

Not sure on that one. I'm curious on what some of the others think it might be?

I'm not real sure. The Confederates used a bunch of home made items. War of 1812 folks were all down that way too. I can't tell how it was attached from the pictures.

I'm guessing they had plates like the size I found? It appears to be lead(?) solder. Might have even been to a cartridge box or another type of accoutrement. Just not sure. Smokeythecat - was the plate you found the same size as mine?

Clearly it soldered onto another piece of metal. I don't know of many plates where this was a fixing option. I highly doubt its Military related.

I wonder what it's purpose was - a labeling plate, maybe?

I thought it might be an ID plate that never got written on, but I'm not very sure.

It looks like it was soldered to something else. The one I found was much larger and had hooks integrally cast into the back of it. No solder.

I'm pretty sure that's just plain old copper and a bit of scrubbing wouldn't hurt to help you see any details like stampings that much be hidden. On the side you say was soldered, it almost looks like an S in the top right corner. I could be seeing things which wouldn't be the first time. I always say it's not like an unidentified piece of scrap copper can lose much value, so scrub till you know.
