I found this in a early 20th century homesite. It appears to me to be some kind of pendant but it looks odd from a 21st century prospective. I assume the circle held a stone or some other decoration but who knows? The rectangular hole is odd also. It's slightly smashed but looks to have been about a quarter inch inthickness originally. It's plated with something maybe nickel and seems to be made of pot metal. No markings of any kind.

Hmmm...the possibilities include locket to hold a deceased loved one's hair, a match safe, a toothpick case, or something similar. Good luck, it is an interesting mystery item. Sub 8-)

this appears to be a court plaster case. a court plaster is just an earlier version of the bandaid. yours looks like late victorian period, the cup on the front probably held a decorative stone or glass cabochon. it would have originally hung on a chain or a chatelaine with other implements.

here is another example in sterling

Thanks for your responses guys but.

Sub - in my opinion the lock of hair would be the best of your guesses as the small size of the opening would make it difficult to get anything back out.

on.off - while the pic that you posted certainly seems very similar and barring any better suggestions I'll go along with you but the opening in mine would make it hard to get anything that long out of the case without a struggle or tweezers.

Thanks again!
