GRATIA DEI SERVATUS means "Preserved by the Grace of God". MDCCCCXXXI might be the date,1931. I wonder if the VS in the center might mean Valor Service? Someone know who issued that medal?

OK, I found a medal identified by Mark Parker in 2003.I don't know how to provide a link to that page. I googled "medal gratia dei servatus" and scrolled down to find it. He says it was issued by Sons of Union Veterans (VS).And the date he gave is 1881.That is the correct date on your medal. He put the value at $20.Thing is,the photo he shows is the back of the medal.

eBay item 6534164033 has pretty near the same item...it would be worth watching. Hey! Junkdigger and others...if you highlight the web address of a good site and press "ctrl" (bottom left key) and the "c" key (at the same time) your computer will remember the highlighted info. Then you can come back here and press "ctrl" and the "v" key (again at the the same time) and your highlighted info will appear! I just learned this recently and thought it was the greatest. For example if you highlight the ebay number I mentioned and and press ctrl and c, then go to ebay and click on the search field and press ctrl and v it'll pop up there for you. I hope all this doesn't sound like a lesson, I just love this site and thought it might help some folks here. -Ben
