Some kind of knob

Found this in old town Sacramento, California.
Looks like a knob of some kind, top orb has a shaft through it.

It appears there is some gold colored plating mostly peeled off
on the front. Certainly brighter than paint, but not sure if it's
gold plate or not. Looks like a curtain rod hanger or something
and they certainly wouldn't plate such a common item gold.

Interesting - ah, better than a Chuck E. Cheeze token, anyway!

Yeah, I think you are right.
I'll put it down as solved.

Though in the back of my head I was hoping that glittery paint,
or whatever it is, signified something more valuable.
