Went to the Fort today. So hard digging in shells and iron. All I found was this iron thing I’ve learned not to throw away any large iron from this place. Any idea?

It was about a foot down which surprises me

Hi , Counter weight ? TP

I've seen weights hanging on a chain to close a gate, that looks like it would work the same.

I bet it was for tying horses to, on a post or stone fence. There were more basic ones in the stone curbs around here.

Nice find, hope it cleans up for display! :occasion14:

carriage horse hitch.

I think AARC nailed it. A foot down in shells and rock in July , in Louisiana !!?? Yikes!!

Hey Truth, another few inches down and you would have hit brimstone!

Hi How can that be , Truth says only swamp donkeys found there .TP

I appreciate all my friends on the team that y’all are the absolute best and I really mean that

19th century, maybe a little newer, but the cast iron is industrial age stuff.

I apologize,,, was away... tired... and hastily posted earlier and got sided...

Anyway......................

What you actually have to be more specific IS...

"Tether weight"... FOR a hitching post ... they have been called a "carriage tether weight" so.
