Good morning to all. So......I am very new to the site, and so far almost all of my posts have been on the North American Indian Artifact forum. But there was a time a number of years ago that I swung a detector around and found a few civil war related items. Someone suggested that I share a few, so here goes. I started with some of my better stuff.......it goes a bit downhill after this. If anyone would like to see close-ups or back sides of any items, just let me know.

Thanks and best to all. Be safe out there.

Nice! That's a sweet Maine buckle right there.

Sorry folks.......I forgot one of the forum rules about location of finds. So.....almost everything in the tray came from either Loudoun County, Virginia, or Clarke County, Virginia. Both counties are in the very northern part of Virginia. I dug the VMM buckle from Fauquier County, about five miles east of Manassas. More specifically at a place called Hopewell Gap. The gap was used by both sides before and after both of the Bull Run battles to cross over Bull Run Mountain. The Loudoun County stuff came from in and around the Town of Leesburg. Just a few miles east of Leesburg was a ferry called Edwards Ferry, and and Army's from both sides crossed the Potomac River at that ferry several times during the war. I dug the Block C button in the Town of Leesburg, where Lee's army was known to have camped. The Clarke County stuff came from just north of the Town of Berryville, and was all Union. There was quite a skirmish at that location that involved Mosbys Rangers, and I believe I stumbled upon a Union camp site from either before or after the Battle of Berryville.

My apologies for not including this info earlier. Best to all.......be safe.

Those are killer! That VMM buckle has me jealous.:laughing7:

Yeah. That find was early in my digging days and it was so light I almost tossed it. There was no lead in the back and it seemed so flimsy I didn't think it could be important. Very glad I held on to it.

I love your finds 'VMM' of course + c=Buttons , Coins , Scales .

That's great info on "location " if I lived near you I love to know the history of that area & I can picture it as it was in the civil war.

I don't reckon the site needs so much "site info 'B but you did state 'most sites in your area have been developed' .

Just my crazy opinion , carry on .

Thanks for posting.
Davers

You don’t have to give site information, davers is the only one required to do that

Thanks eTex......I am slowly learning how this site runs. All good.......no harm meant. Good feelings all around. So......I see you are from Texas, so I will share a short story. A few months ago my wife and I drove from Northern Virginia to Whitney, Texas, to visit some old friends. Whitney is north of Waco.......hard to tell how many miles.........everything seems bigger in Texas. My first morning there I'm up at 0500. I figure out a coffee maker I have never seen before, and walk out to the back of the house to enjoy the sunrise with a cup of unknown strength java, only to be greeted by a very hungry looking coyote. We eyeballed each other for awhile.......he licked his lips....I sipped my coffee, and then he took off toward a large pond and I never saw him again. I think we were both happy about that. Later in the day, we were driving towards Waco and experienced a storm front that included several very interesting tornadoes. We managed to dodge those, and fortunately things calmed down for the next few days. Never saw the coyote or tornado's again, but I did meet my very first cottonmouth at that pond a few days later when I was doing some bass fishing. We parted ways without a conflict, but I was left with the impression that water moccasins have a very bad attitude. I am very glad that they are not yet in Virginia. Thanks for the advice on the level of detail.......I will scale it back a bit in the future.

Great looking saves there Virginiaguy!! The one that catches my eye is that Calvary button :icon_thumright:
