Here is some stuff I found last year. All are river/creek finds.. Im kind of new to this hobby so I'm still honing my visual scanning skills everytime I go out. I've still managed to find a couple things though.

Here are my favorite ones

DSCN0658.jpg

Mainly broken ones and a hand held knife (?) of some sort at top right, it too thick to have been hafted, and the base isn't worked.

Rocks with holes in them. What were these used for? I figured the ones with half circles worn into the sides were for holding a drill shaft steady or mabey shaft straigtening? I dont know tho, help me out here. Also are 2 broken clay pipes that are very similar and were found on the same sand bar at 2 different times. On one you can still see the coils of clay thet werent completely smoothed over.

Ok heres my mystery rock, its sandstone, its highly polished, it fits perfectly in the hand and even has an indention that perfectly fits the index and middle finger when you hold the broken 'handle' end of it. What is this thing? I can't find anything like it in all my artifact books. I found it 5 feet away from the large dalton in the first picture.

Cool finds, bud. Maybe they're pendants and sometimes you might use them to draw arrow shafts through. Ceremonial is what archys call anything they don't understand. I don't know about the mystery piece. It's not a fossil of some type, is it?

Nice finds angler. The rocks with holes in them are what we call "holy stones" or basically just rocks with holes in them. They are natural formations and are found in creeks and streams all the time. They are formed by a softer material eroding out of the spot where the hole is now.

As for your unusual piece my guess is it's a natural formation as well. You would be amazed what a few million years and Mother Nature can do to stones.

About those 2 things you are calling pipes...are they white & made of porcellain??? I have found several of them in the Bay in here in Panama City Florida. If they are the same things that I have found, I think they are more modern, but can't place them. Do they have mold marks?? Mine do. I actually think they are some sort of plumbing fixture. I'll try to post some pics for comparison later, but I have my relic room in transition right now, so I have to dig them out in the next day or so.

Thanks to everyone for your replies and input.

Jpitt, they are white but show no mold marks. They are clearly handmade as they are very assymetrical and one shows the original clay coils that were crudely smoothed over. They may be modern, I simply don't have the expertice to determine that. They were found in an area where I have found numerous flint points, but at the same time I have also found 100 yr old glass bottles there too. Thats the thing about rivers, never know what you're gonna find, or from which time period. I'll just keep picking up interesting stuff, and everytime i find something new it forces me to learn something new, i love it.

The white things are broken ends of porcelain wire insulators used on homes 100 years ago. A hole was drilled through the rafters, and this was inserted into the hole for the wire to pass through. Wires were separate, not together like they are now. I have some here if you want pics to compare. I tore down an old house not long ago that had a bunch of those in it.

You are finding some nice points!!

Some of the bottles you are finding may be good ones. Bring a few home and put some pictures up in the bottle section. The bottles are probably washing out of a dump near the river. If you walk up stream from where you find the bottles , keep a close eye on the eroding banks for more glass comming out. If you find that spot, get yourself a long screwdriver and work your way into the bank and you may find the dump.

Good luck on your next hunt!!

Twig.
