The first one would be used for splicing two wires together. Slide them both in the hole and tighten the nut. The second looks like some kind of wire anchor, for attaching a wire to somthing.

The first one looks like a device to hook a ground wire to a sunken metal rod. Look out by your electric meter and you will probably find another one! The second is also some type of clamp to hold a ground wire me thinks? JIM

JakePhelps and Jimmileo are both correct. I have a few of both in my garage that I salvaged off of some cables during the demolition of a 30's era church.

Everyone's right on these, we used them when I worked for the phone co. a few years back. The top is indeed made to fasten a ground wire to a metal grounding rod (used when no ground is available on the building), and the second is used to attach a ground to an existing copper ground wire from the electric box.. I'm not sure how long ago they started using them, but I used them back in the 90's.

Heres another cruddy whatsit i found in the ocean while MDing.... It says Lafayette on both sides. Definetly modern :-\
