Reminds me of the byzantine coinage

http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/byz/i.html

but I haven't seen them cup shaped before :icon_scratch:, which makes me think it early medieval in the Byzantine style.

This is just a guess which may help someone research it.

Crusader I have to agree - this looks quite like a Byzantine "scyphate" coin ("cup-shaped") which were deliberately made slightly cupped like that. I have one in my collection (much worse shape than this example we see here) The imagery also looks late Byzantine (note the cross with extra crosslet) so I agree, that looks like the best route to research. (Here is one site with some decent photos, not all Byzantine types of course
http://www.byzantinecoins.com/)

Neat coin to find - may I ask where it was found? Thank you in advance,
Oroblanco

Merhaba!

Welcome! I lived at Karamursel Air Station from 1966-1968.

Turkey is a beautiful country and some of my best memories are from there.

A beautiful Byzantine coin you have there! I remember a trip to the bazaar in Bursa and a gentleman was selling old coins out of a cardboard beer box. He had a large assortment of ancient coins from the Middle East, as well as old European coins. I bought a 1816S Austrian Ein Kreuzer from him that I still have. If I had known more about coins then, I would have bought all of them from him.

I also remember the earthquake I lived through in 1967, a 7.6 magnitude that I will never forget.

I would love to see more of your finds! Thank you for showing us!
