Haven't posted much, but have definitely been putting on the miles. Didn't get empty handed, got a pile of chunks and flakes and some broke pieces. All field finds.

This flake almost looks like a drill

This is the "what is it", it looks like a possible celt or adze me, but not ruling out natural. Not sure the type of stone, its real dense/heavy, its kind of light turquoise colored and has a celt-like shape which stuck out in the field. I did clean the rock with a brush, but the dirt on the one side is like cement. Its crude looking, but it looks like a round bit and you can see where there's smooth parts which I believe are the original "shell" of the rock and not so much smoothed out by man.

I tried taking pics in natural light at different angles to see depth and all that. Could be natural, opinions appreciated.

Nice finds , a few heartbreakers in there ... that one base is huge and that tip looks like some nice flaking I would have kept your mystery item too has that worked look to it .... as flat as it is maybe a hoe / spade but thatā€™s just a guess in any case looks like a good day

That's the way it flops sometimes. A guy can hunt hard, sometimes for way to long then after awhile luck comes back and a guy can't miss. You will be on the upswing soon.

Very nice finds as Mr. 86 says. Wish we had seen both sides of the shard. I think it's a shard, might be able to ID, and age it if there is any decoration on it.

The ā€˜whatsitā€™ item looks like a celt or adze that someone roughed out but obviously didnā€™t finish. Youā€™ll see makers go hard on blanks to make sure they arenā€™t investing work in a rock that has unseen flaws. Sometimes they are discarded, other times they set them away for further work.

In your area I think a lot of tools like that were probably campfire or winter work. (Sit around and work on it when itā€™s 40 below zero outside.)

The "flake that looks like a drill" is a core struck bladelet. Whoever made it knew what they were doing. Perfectly made, and you can see the two previous detachments on the face. These were expedient tools made to use quickly and then discarded when they went dull. Kind of like a disposable razor knife. Nice find. Gary

Thanks for the input guys, I'll post a pic of the other side of the shard when I'm home. Those are my thoughts as well on the 'what is it' being a rough tool. It's certainly a stone I don't normally see in these fields, especially the color and weight.

I wondered if the flake had some function, interesting.

good luck out there!

stemmed piece looks like a scraper.
