I found this coin on a property that has a house that was built in 1914, but the yard leads to the woods where the remains of an old carriage road can still be seen. The yard also had a carriage house that burned down in the 60's, but it was old. About 20 feet from where I found this coin, I found a 1720 George I Half Penny. About 50 feet away I found a 1854 seated liberty dime. So there are older items in this area.

I can make out at least 2 Fleur DE Li's on one side, I'm assuming it is the reverse. If it is French, there is most likely a third. On this side there appears to be writing encircling it, but I can't make out the words, perhaps in a different language.

I have oriented the obverse based on the Fleur DE Li's being in an upside down triangle pattern, so I flipped it like a normal coin. Up near the top I can make out some raised edges that looks like spiky hair. Near the bottom is also some ragged detail, perhaps the base of a bust. However if you rotate it 90 degrees, these two areas would line up as if they were a wreath. I just can't tell what is going on with the obverse.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Jai

Can you find those in America? Are they the same size as an American Lincoln penny? Any pictures of the other side?

It's a French Double Tournois. Probably this one.

Hi Ironpatch, it does look like the pic you posted, and this was found by an older stagecoach road, but in America. Can you tell me what the name of the coin you posted is? What date range it was minted, what metal is it made of. My coin is definately copper.

It's a French "Double Tournois" and is made of copper. They date late 1500s to the mid. 1600s. I can see the 39 on your coin (at least I think I can - last pic), so it is 1639, and the one I posted is the most common type for 1639 ....so that is most likely it. Many French coins circulated in the American Colonies so it is not a big Surprise. Just maybe to you. ;D

Wow, I believe you, I guess I'm just shocked to find such an old coin.... Thanks a ton for the ID. So, what are the chances I could flatten it out without damaging the details such as the date? Has anyone ever had to flatten a bent coin before? Any tricks to limiting the damage or is it best left alone?

Personally, leave it. :)

Agreed, there is no chance of straighten this one without further damage.

When it's bent that bad it's a relic! (and meant to be left alone)

Great ID IP, as usual, on worn coin. :icon_thumright:
