Solved: It's a Match Safe. (Though still wondering if I can find an exact date.)

Found this along the bank of a historic river this past Sunday. It's about the same size as the bottom of a lighter. Though the photos don't show it, it has a seam (distorted now) on the side opposite the hinge. Lighter bottom or match case bottom? Something else? Date?

Thanks,
_Rich_

Re: Lighter? Match case? Other? Date?

Thanks. I didn't even realize that's what that was but it makes perfect sense. Any idea on date?

Re: Lighter? Match case? Other? Date?

I just took a look at bunch of them on ebay under: match safes.

The majority of them are sterling silver. You may want to check yours for that.

Thanks. That term helps in searching ("match cases" was turning up mainly modern stuff).

Thought it was silver at first while digging it by the sound of it and the numbers but it isn't cleaning up like silver and it looks to have been plated as well.

I'm going to agree with the above poster - turn of the century - (late 1800's - early 1900's).

Mostly because of the cherubs on the face - they were quite popular in that time period, and they did them in silver, silver-plated, silver-plated over lead.
