Hi All,

This is a non-dug find. I picked up a small collection of buttons that included four US Great Seal buttons. One of them was this button. It measures 23mm. The front is the standard Great Seal button and the backmark reads "PAT. 54296 RENEWED '35". I did a Google Patent search and came up with this:

patents.jpg

The patent is for an American Legion button not a Great Seal button.

Is this strange to get the front of one button and the back from another "married" together? Is this type of button considered an error? Are "error" buttons more collectible or desirable in a button collection.

I cannot find an example of this backmark anywhere. Does anyone know who made this button?

I know I have asked a lot of questions but I do not know anything about buttons. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Doug

Re: Great Seal button with the WRONG backmark?

Hello Turtlefoot. I work in the Everglades and I just got back in town and on-line. It appears to be an interesting WWI backmark. Ill have to research it and add it to the list. :icon_thumright: It may be a manufacturers error.

We need to read the patent. Is the 1919 patent for a button type or for the American Legion design? ???

Errors do occur. Someone posted a button a while back that was double stamped with 2 different companies. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,308183.0.html

I re-read everything and it states the patent holder claims the "ornamental design for an emblem button as shown".

I read it too and it clearly states the Dec 19, 1919 patent is for an ornamental design for an emblem button. So I guess its a WWII manufacturers error. Its the only explanation. They used up all available stock for the war effort. I would date this button from 1935-1946.

WWI ended on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918. Of interest World War I officially ended last week for Germany when they paid off the last chunk of reparations imposed on it by the Allies. (mostly the French) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor.../8029948/First-World-War-officially-ends.html

Re: Great Seal button with the WRONG backmark?

Thanks for the information BigCy I really appreciate it. I saw that on the news earlier about the final payment being made. I thought that was interesting.

Thanks Again,
Doug

If we could only get Japan to pay the way Germany does.

I wish I knew just how much reparations was owed worldwide. I guess I could look it up somewhere.
