Hello,

I just found this site last night and I've already read many of the threads and I must say I'm very impressed by the knowledge and the helpful attitude of the members here! Hats off to those that take the time and put alot of effort into giving a bit of their knowledge and insight to fellow members! I've already learned so much in such a short time.
Ok, the item in question is an Egyptian Pendant with Hieroglyphics. I'm far from an expert on Egyptian Hieroglyphics, but I can make out a few of the Hieroglyphics on this pendant with some help from the internet, but I'm still stumped. This piece was found while coin hunting with a metal detector in Inyo County, CA along the Owens River near a ghost town. I'm not exactly sure of the metal used or it's approx age.
Any help deciphering it's age, authenticity, Hieroglyphics, worth & etc.. would be helpful.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

Re: Egyptian Hieroglyphic Pendant....

I know this one. I need to get out the camera. Its from the Sears catalog mail order era.

Its from an Egyption Revival era watch fob. The ad is from 1909 Sears Roebuck and Co.

Re: Egyptian Hieroglyphic Pendant....

BCH.....that's a cool pic too. Thanks again for your help.

Hmm.....not sure what this coin was doing out where it was found, but maybe it was lost by coin hunters or prospectors back in the day?!

Like harmonica reeds, a lot of these are found on Civil War sites, so therefore they "must be Civil War related."
However, they are post was a indicated above, but occasionally you will see these for sale at inflated prices because of their mistaken Civil War connection.

Neat Find!

It would be interesting to know when Egyptian imitation stuff was hot. I know that after Napoleon brought a bunch of stuff back, everyone wanted something that looked Egyptian, perhaps in the 1830's also. Barnum had some mummies, etc. in his museum that burned in when, the 1880's? Seems like there were some others that burned in NY somwhere in the 1860's, and some in Chicago in 1888? Apparently good in 1909 and perhaps again in the 20's with Tut. Any other ideas for a time frame? This is for the US only, perhaps the time line is similar or somwhat different in Europe.

There were 2 Egyptian Revival periods in the US. I cant recall the dates but you are thinking right.

You are correct. There were two. http://www.antiquesavenue.com/egyptian-revival-jewellery/2010/11/

This is a cool read too... http://www.archaeology.org/online/features/egyptian_nyc/19thcentury.html

These items are Egyptian Magic Coin tokens.

Egyptian Magic Coin token

They have Egyptian symbols on both sides, one side has the sphinx and pyramids,
the other side has a pharoah and various hieroglyphic symbols.

Apparently the first use was as a watch fob sold by the Sears company in 1905.

Later, the medallions with loops were made for wearing as amulets or jewelry.

Some are found with the loops removed and look like coins.

I have seen versions of this item for years on Internet coin and metal detecting boards,
on Ebay, at coin shows, and even in movies.

See my website under "Egyptian Magic Coin Token" for more information on these items.

:)
