I had to use digital zoom, hurts the quality a bit, as he (or she) was so far away.

Looks good. There was a time when there was no such thing as digital zoom.
 

I wonder about my camera, it zooms so close with out all the fancy add on lens, I'm thinking it uses some sort of digital boost for those close up long shots. What ever, it works pretty good.

I believe that last stage on the zoom meter you see on your camera is increased levels of digital zooming. I know the image quality drops when went in go into that level of zoom over the optical zooming.
