I'm afraid I haven't had time to learn the different Horse and buggy parts other than a few basic ones, like reign guides, bits, stirrups and some of the buckles I can tell are probably related because they are too heavy for humans. Most have been brass, though not unusual to have an iron tongue. But this one has me stumped.
It is ALL iron, (which may be more common than I know, because I don't always dig iron alone - on purpose) and its general shape where it looks like the leather strap or belt should be a lot smaller than the buckle itself. I did kind of a quick online search without any positive matches. It is overall 3 1/2" long X 3 1/4" wide including the leather loops.
It looks like it would have leather attached from all four directions.

I know there are some of you who are knowledgeable about these things, I'm trying to get a general date of a new site, any help as always is greatly appreciated.

Yes, buckle is horse related. It is civil war era. I found the same same in an area that was burned by Sherman on his march through South Carolina. I have it in electrolysis.

That is called a 2-loop collar buckle. It could be Civil War era ... or not ... and not necessarily Civil War related at all, especially if found in an area that has been farmed for years. Could have just come from an old work horse plowing the fields.

It certainly looks like a horse buckle, but, it seems awfully lightweight to be on horse tack. What size is it?

He gave the measurements as being: "It is overall 3 1/2" long X 3 1/4" wide including the leather loops."

I think the age would be about right, not in a war related area generally. Thanks, that helps.

OK thanks, I'll go look for that.
