Not a dumb question, but it does depend on what level of definition you need.
Most people just respond with clay soil versus sandy soil, but ask any gardener in your
area, and they will know.
Clay-laden soil is slow to absorb water and is often hard-packed.
Sandy soil has much better drainage.
Another variable is how much organic matter it contains, with supports
growth of plants - called loamy soil.
 

Contact your county cooperative extension. Most states and counties have maps of soil types for the farming and agricultural types.

From where you are I'd guess glacial silt.

Well thanks Charlie, Thats a good idea. Is Michigan known for having highly mineralized soil?
 

Jason the soil is a little materialized but not to bad until you start to get around MQT and then west, more less the hilly areas, south and eastern up is ancient sea bed, i would imagine the minerals are from the glacial actions. i guess they may be mining gold around Shakey lakes soon, a buddy was talking to the test drillers and said it should be one of the biggest gold strikes in the U.S. in many years
