So enough of the bickering and back to what this forum is about.
Yesterday DGD had a club outing at one of our claims. This was my second time to this claim. I first time I went, December 2014, the club pulled up to the claim to realize we had been locked out by a new gate. With the assistance of AMRA, the club has since overcome that obstacle. Back to this weekend, there was a lot of rain the previous 24 hrs. I went to the claim early to get a head start.
When I arrived, the creek was high, at least a foot higher than the normal level. Where I was there was no drive up access so I walked the creek looking for a place to set up my equipment. My disappointment was increasing as I walked realizing I wasn't going to be able to set up anywhere and I left my backpacking gear at the house. I went back to my truck and contemplated checking out another area but I decided to wait for the club.
That turned out to be the right decision as I was at the lower part of the claim. I followed the rest of the club to the upper end, an area I didn't realize was part of the claim. Upon first look, this area resembled the lower area with exception to access. I walked the creek for about 200 yards and came upon a gravel bench I could back up to. I decided I might as well try it.
I started to unload my truck and hauled my tubs town to the creek. Before I moved anymore equipment, i decided to do a test pan using my Super Sluice. I had good color so I finished setting up my equipment. I was running my recirc system to begin with but eventually pumped water from the creek due to my filters getting clogged.
I began to dig and classify to 1/2". I classify in a 27 gal tub as I feel it is much faster than in a bucket. As I was digging, I started hitting another layer. I continued to dig into this layer when I got a gut feeling to do a test pan. Good thing I did, I would have wasted a lot of time and effort. I filled the tub half way before transferring it into buckets to carry it to sluice. Within the first two scoops, I was seeing good color in the inspection mat. After running the two buckets, my recirc was clogging so I did a clean out. I panned the cons down to super one and put them aside.
At this time I decided to pump directly from the creek. Once I did some field redesigning, I fired up the pump and made some adjustments. As the water overflowed the second tub, I realized my equipment was set up in a drainage that ran parallel to the creek. I decided I was only going to do one more run so I classified and filed the tub all the way. It was during this run I decided to get some video. For a day that looked like it would end early, it turned out pretty good and the weather cooperated.
Here is a short video of my operation.
