Last week I had went to a park that has 2 soccer fields.
I had used my White's M6 with a 4.5 X 7 coil on the bottom field and found some clad coins and a gold plated ring. The field last week had a little bit of trash items, so this week I decided to hunt the 2nd field( the top field).
I took my M6 and tried with the 6X10 Eclipse coil .

WRONG !!!!

The 2nd field must be an older field because there was so many screwcap, bottlecap, pulltab and itron readings I couldn't get a good lock on any coins with the 6X10 coil. After an hour and a half of digging these trash items hoping to get to a coin, which I didn't do..... I decide to go to the playground area, and within 10 minutes pick up 11 cents....all pennies.

Here is a sat. pic scan for the park area. It has a crushed shell driveway and parking area, so it has not been "upgraded" to a new style park yet, and has a possibility for some older coins. The small playground area is just 1 swingset, with 2 spots for babies and 2 spots for regular. I am thinking the upper area on the right is used for baseball or football. There are picnic tables along the bottom edge of the scan...along the tree line, and along the small line of trees around the parking lot.
From the pictures I took last week, Piggman said the fields looked pretty rough as in the condition of them.
They are not a green grass carpet looking set of fields, and that is the only reason, why I am trying hunting them.

Should I go back and use the larger coil( instead) on the bottom field(less trash) and the smaller coil ( instead) on the top field (more trash)????

Any other ideas or suggestions from soccer field hunters???

I use only my large 9 1/2" coil for doing these fields. I hunt crossways to the field starting behind the goal line. Seems like most rings I find are in the 20-30' range in front of the goals, even though I find them all over the field. I use little construction flags that you can get at Home Depot for 100 of them for about $5. I start by placing a flag at my start point. Search a stright line across the field as far as I want to go, take 3 steps in the direction I am going down field, and place a second flag. From that flag I work my way back to my first flag. This gives you some overlap from your previous trip accross. You also find things you missed on your first trip accross because of the overlap. When I get back to the first flag, I pick it up and take 3 steps down field and place it there, and work my way back to the second flag. You keep doing this as you move down the field with each flag. You are searching a triangle type pattern between flags. I have inclosed a drawing of my search pattern to give you a better idea of what I am talking about. Thestart point for the flags iswrong on the drawing. I use my Sun Ray pinpointer to determine whether to dig a target or not. If I can even faintly hear the target with the pinpointer, I gid it. The only exception is if it is a quarter signal, or in that range, then I will dig it no matter what because that is what silver rings come up as. Most rings though don't seem to sink as deep as coins for some reason. Hope this answered your question, if not let me know and I will try and help as much as I can.

I redid the drawing to make it correct, Here it is.

Piggman,
Thanks for a reply.

Both of the fields are the same size but have completely different amounts of trash items in each.
The 6X10 coil should work good, but the field I searched today had so many multiple signals so close to another I could not get a good separate reading on individual targets, in the area I covered.

I dug about 35 trash items in the area that is chalk marked right in front of the goal post area and with the larger coil and didn't get any coins at all. The other field in this park I searched last week in the same area in front of the goal post with the small coil... I did pretty good on getting some coins... but there wasn't as much trash items in that field.

I have read larger coils work better in these fields. Since this is my 2nd soccer field hunt and I did better with a smaller coil, I have to disagree....for now.

I have some orange golf tees I use to mark the area a little bit...easy to see in gray dirt areas or the lack of grass areas on these fields. I put one every 2-3 ft. lenghtwise and about a swing width across. Gridding the area isn't a problem as I have gridded a few areas in the past to get a good coverage of areas.

It is the trash difference on both these fields( 1- I believe is many years older than the other).

You still think the larger coil is a better choice??? 6X10 or the 950 Eclipse?? I have them both.

If there is alot of trash close together i would use the smaller coil. I have done a field or two with my 4 X 6 DD coil and it did great for seperating the trash, It just took longer to cover the area. On top of that, it you hit a coin patch the smaller coil works great, where the large coil gets confused with too many targets too close together. I dig the trash because some of my most valuable gold finds have been found by doing this. Those days are far and few between, but when you hit one it makes it all worthwhile. As you read in my post, this place I am doing now is nothing but trash that others have passed over. That's why I'm doing it, at least a couple of more tries, because they would have missed the gold. It's a lot of uneventfull work for the takes, and if it doesn't pay off in a day or two I will give it up and move on. Here is a pic of one of my finds by doing this on areas just like this one. It is 23+K gold and weighs a few penntweights under an ounce. Many others passed it over as trash.

This 2nd field has lots of real close signals so I want to go back and try the smaller coil on it.

I don't think these have been hit with detectors, if they were, they left all the trash, which could be some old nickles and gold items. Since the 1st field didn't have too much trash I will take the larger coil, to hunt it.

thanks for the advice.

Keep me posted as to how well it works out. Hope you find the best!

Dimeman, I too will be waiting your oucome. I have the same issues with soccer fields. Large area and a lot of trash. Very frustrating especially since its so hot.

Keep safe...
