The Wethersfield George D. Ritchie Soccer Club, a non-profit organization, traces its roots back to the late 1960’s / early 1970’s when there were two separate soccer organizations in Wethersfield.
One organization, the Wethersfield Youth Soccer League, provided recreation soccer program for the youth of Wethersfield. The name of the organization was changed in 1978 to the Wethersfield George D. Ritchie Youth Soccer League in honor of George D. Ritchie, who had been an influential supporter and organizer of youth soccer programs in Wethersfield.
The other organization, the Wethersfield Soccer Club (WSC), was formed in 1973 when a boys high school team was formed to provide a competitive level of soccer competition. WSC was formed into a nonprofit organization and accepted into the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association (CJSA) with 3 boys teams. Three years later, the first girls team was formed at the high school level.
The Wethersfield George D. Ritchie Soccer Club (“WGDRSC”, the “Club”) was formed in 1995 when the George D. Ritchie Youth Soccer League merged with the Wethersfield Soccer Club. The new organization was established to create a single entity that would direct the town's youth soccer program. The overall goals of the merger were to develop an integrated recreational and competitive program that would benefit the youth of Wethersfield, support a full spectrum of soccer playing levels and advance the development of the sport within Wethersfield.
