Having looked for things in the dirt for over 60 years now, I found something quite unique. I was digging at a friend's house west of Valley Forge, way west, and got a screamer signal. Out comes this tombac button with the SHANK still attached. Like never! Got other buttons and an intact iron Rev War military type shoe buckle, but it's going to take a bit to get it preserved.

One of the best I've seen!

Congratulations Smokey.
That’s a beautiful recovery
Thanks again for sharing

That right there is a thing of beauty. 👍
Congrats Smokey. Looking forward to seeing that buckle too.

That's a nice looking button.

Which method would you use to preserve the buckle? Thinned Elmer's glue bath, hot wax dip or polyurethane. It may go "poof" otherwise.

No, that's just the tombac. The soil there is wonderful. It's black from 300 years of tossed refuse.
