CANNON BALLS ...

It was necessary to keep a good supply of cannon balls near the cannon on old war ships. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck was the problem. The storage method devised was to stack them as a square based pyramid, with one ball on top, resting on four, resting on nine, which rested on sixteen.

Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others.

The solution was a metal plate with 16 round indentations, called, for reasons unknown, a Monkey. But if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make them of brass - hence, Brass Monkeys .

Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey.

Thus, it was quite literally, cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey. And all this time, folks thought that was just a vulgar expression?

You must send this fabulous bit of historical knowledge to at least a few intellectual friends.

Son of a gun ,... I did not know !! FCCDE......d nice bit of history there .
Funny how meanings of some things change over time ,.. And if the literal can be misconstrued into something vulgar ,.. Then it must be possible for an “innocent” saying such as “son of a gun” to have been vulgar at one time ??
In the day of Wooden ships and Iron men , many in Her Majesty’s Navy were somewhat pressed into service , these were free men of sorts and would eventually be paid for this “service” . Now, after many month’s at sea , and making port with a pocket of coin ,.. I don’t believe you would have seen many of these boy’s again .
It must have been customary , for the Captain to arrange for some “Lady’s” and rum for the boy’s entertainment ,... for a small percentage, of course. Now , imagine a “dance” upon the main deck ,... not well illuminated ,.... and a lot of rum . Apparently ,.... some of the “Entertainment” would find it’s way down onto the darker Gun decks of the ship . Well ,.. A long story short ,... a child conceived on a gun deck ,... Son Of A Gun .
Now ,... I would like to believe , back in the day there where a few Gentle Men ,....that would have at lest thrown down a few coils of rope ,....... for the lady’s comfort ,from all those cannon balls and Brass Monkey’s .

There you go ,........Blindpig

Well ,.. just bust my Brass Monkey's Bells would ya....

Now ,. I just had to snopes "Son of a gun" ,. Status ; Undetermined
Snopes was play'n the child born aboard , cannon father , etc... Hell , they didn't even mention the much more colorful "Child conceived on a gun deck" Theory ,... there loss

Anyway , I still like "Cold enough to freeze the bells off a brass monkey,....
just has a nice "ring" to it now ,.. doesn't it ??... ;D...Blindpig
