Had to take my wife to Friesland Saturday to visit her brother, so had 5 hours to find some gold there. It was finally good weather, only a couple of drips of rain, after 2 weeks of almost continuous rain, so glad to get out. Since Shaun is just itching to get over to the mainland and search I though he (and you) might enjoy seeing all the nice finds....

Totals
1x large iron axe, the largest I have ever found! Sure was a long walk to the car....
22x bronze coins, could read about 5, all from 18..
13x tiny lead seals (bags)
3x somewhat larger lead seals
1x barrel tap (red arrow)
1x piece of a toy race auto (blue arrow)
1x round ring
1x cut off thimble (purple arrow)
1x 50 cal bullet? (lavender arrow)
1x wow a broken button (yellow arrow)
1x don't know? (black arrow) ANY IDEAS someone?
6x buckles
- a piece of a microscope under the buckles.
- some pieces of bronze with some figures on it?

Super nice finds. That axe head is huge.

Its heavy too darn it. Now to get it conserved. Hard work for iron, have to bake it at about 600 C for quite some time, otherwise they will bleed later, and rust through. Would like to remove and conserve the wood, then put it back in, but I guess its hammered in and that won't be possible. Pity. Have had pretty good luck with iron the past years, but the thicker the harder, and this bugger is thick....

I've hunted a lot worse than that. Looks like a good day to me. See you next week for some coffee & cake.

OK with me, yes I know about the "coffee and cakes" also! (my youngest son is 23!).... You know you are
welcome anytime.... I just don't have the places you guys have to search though...

Awesome finds! I am not sure why but, I often hear jokes, in German, about Friesland and have seen several sarcastic movies about East Friesland. Is it windmills or something? I am curious. I would also enjoy a hunt there. HH, Mike

Well Mike East Friesland is in Germany, then you have Friesland, and then West Friesland (much smaller than the others). I live in West Friesland. Our group (www.wf4.nl) used to go to Friesland years ago to search, about a hour away. We always found silver. Then after a few years there was less and less, until we got skunked a few times, now we (as a group) never go there. Places are getting hard to find because so much is searched out. Yea, I know, the plow always turns something over that's I guess true. But to walk around a large field searching the whole day for that one item, well we have other places to try. Metal detecting is always going to get harder, but better detectors seem to be helping. But found is found, and then gone is gone, there just ain't no Romans around anymore!

I don't know anything about East Friesland, or about the movies, or even the windmills....
