So...my daughter is in Australia, what should she bring me back as a gift?

Must be nice. She and her husband are there for three weeks! Right now they are at Ayers' Rock aka Uluru if I spelled that right, zooming around on Segways. Its winter there. For a bit they flew over the juncture of the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean. I asked for a toy Koala and a toy Tasmania devil as they were in Tasmania for a few days. I guess it's the great barrier reef next. They have been there only one week into their vacation and have been on 6 flights already.

Tradition says a boomerang, but a funnel-web spider would be more exciting. Especially if you don't find it in the initial unboxing.

I'm thinking you should ask them very nicely, to bring back some Australian Opal for you. Many different types & also many price ranges depending on rarity. I think it would be even nicer if they found some natural un-cut opal, out on 1 of their adventures.

The opal suggestion or coin set. Though the Vegemite is of required taste.

We drove for to all those spots over a 2 month trip 31 yrs ago.
Climbed that big old red rock, snorkled the Great Barrier Reef.
Flying to each local is a great experience, though driving and camping was also a trip in itself.

A nice opal would be a lovely thing to bring back. Last time I was there, I found a beautiful opalised belemnite fossil in a rock & gem shop, but you'd need to seek out an item like that. Something available at most tourist markets are key rings with a resin fob containing a 'redback' spider (Australian black widow). They're small, and the guy that I bought mine from told me the impressively large ones are made of rubber and aren't real spiders.

A digeridoo!

The opal is a great idea. Australian opals are beautiful & come in many ranges of color.
Kind of regret that we didn't push the driving a tad more, and go to Coober Pedy to see the opal mine/attractions.
The visa was running out and we still had to sell car in Darwin.

They are either a) on airplanes or b)at resorts. Must be nice but in a couple days are going to the great barrier reef and taking a cruise up some river or another. I told her to watch out for crocodiles and she told me they didn't allow them on the boat (apparently not a little tiny boat.) When they went to Ayers Rock they used Segways.
