UPDATE ON MEDAL:

See below.

This close to the end of the year and not knowing when the ground will completely close up. I decided to give hunting for old stuff a try today. (so maybe Vino will let me back in his good graces ;) )

To that end, I got out of the way and allowed the Lord to show me where to try. He picked the cornfield! (YIKES!)

I knew I was in for a long day of not much finding and probably not much in the way of a keeper but, since He picked the spot, I had a hunch, ya know? :)

I layered up and off I went. Since I hunted yesterday, I figured maybe an hour or two. (not much confidence huh? LOL )

So, I get there, crank up the machine and start off for my stumbling through the cornstalks. I really don't like how hard I gotta work to find stuff in cornfields but ya know, they'd done something here. Didn't disk but the stalks were all knocked flat! Still stumbled a bit but I could swing the detector more normally! That was the first sign that He'd picked the right place.

The next sign? Well, the VERY FIRST target I dug opened up like this:

2014 (1013).jpg

I didn't care if this was a banner find or just knock out from an electrical outlet somewhere. LOL That the corn was flat and the first find looks like THIS!?!? I said a prayer, looked up and winked, I said, "Game on!" LOL
(more on this one later)

Went about my stumbling and listening and this next one sounded a bit like a pulltab. But, that's good. You see, in this cornfield, those hits usually turn out to be bullets.

Anyway:

2014 (1015).jpg

I could see the loop so I just placed it in my fragile finds pouch, dirt and all. I'd clean later but I knew I'd already found 2 keepers! I've hunted there before and let me tell you, I have hunted for DAYS and not found a decent keeper there!

Then, there was this one:

2014 (1016).jpg
2014 (1017).jpg

Didn't have an idea in the field, so, in the fragile pouch and on I went.

2014 (996).jpg

Four hours later but it sure don't look like much, does it. :)

2014 (997).jpg
2014 (998).jpg
2014 (999).jpg

This is fairly heavy metal. I'm not sure. :icon_scratch:

2014 (1000).jpg

Non-magnetic and it has tiny holes in the cross member.
Buckle?

2014 (1001).jpg

Wholly toasted 1920 wheatie.

2014 (1002).jpg

This is what one of those finds in the fragile pouch turned out to be.

2014 (1003).jpg

Here's that first find again. Still couldn't figure much so I put it aside for toothpickin', just in case.

2014 (1004).jpg2014 (1005).jpg

This was the button with the loop. I just toothpicked away and the dirt just came clean away!
I think they call this a Tombac button? I've found many of these over the years and this one
is the absolute cleanest, most complete one I've ever found. Can anyone date this by the type of
loop on the back?

2014 (1007).jpg

Now, back to this first find. I started picking at it slowly, (just in case LOL ).
I figured it was just some sort of tag or token or some such and I'm still not
convinced otherwise. BUT....

2014 (1008).jpg

As I picked, I noticed some letters at the edge to the right.
So, I slowed down a bit.

2014 (1010).jpg

The back is no help yet. I'll start that later.

Then, at the bottom I saw this:

2014 (1009).jpg

Sorry that I don't have a complete ID on this one yet but
I'm going to take my time trying to get this cleaned up.

Just in case! LOL

2014 (1011).jpg

Non-magnetic but look how thin this thing is! :dontknow:

I had a very fine day today! Stumbling through cornstalks and all! :)

And as I get closer to closing out the year, I did what I set out to do.
Find some of what I got into this hobby to do. Wonderfully old stuff!

Merry Christmas folks!

Thanks for stopping by!

Excellent post WIF! Great pictures and nice layout!
Boy, when one listens to that inner voice!

Nice finds!, looks like a large cent of some sort!, gotta love them fields huh!!

So now, do you understand why I'll take a rough old corn field over a nice, smooth manicured lawn? Very nice finds Gary. I'd go back ASAP before that ground closes up lol.

I dunno, it seems too large and too thin. I'm kinda thinking a token of some sort. Still! :)

I know the fields is where it's at but it's just so tough on me anymore.

I just had to go find something old before Vino convinces everybody that I just can't find anything but clad. ;)

Thanks!

Have to disagree a bit there. I have found some WONDERFUL coins in my many travels! (see my post under best finds). The absolute best ones? Were all in parks, churches, school grounds, etc. The cornfields? Old, yeah, but everything has been destroyed by the fertilizer. :dontknow:

Nice finds. Glad you got some old stuff at the corn field! Good show!

Nice digs W.F I am going out on a limb and guessing a large cent? For the love of god clean her up.:) I am hating the thought of snow and frozen ground too.I should be hunting right now but I don't think my machine likes dampness to much,it just rained here and I think more is on its way.Look forward to seeing what you got there

Don't need to know what it is supposed to look like... I have my own example, lol. I found mine in the frozen yard of Cjon and my last permission.

Annnnnnnnd, I still say give me an old field that has been used for generations!

.... Annnnnnnnd, I still say give me an old field that has been used for generations!

Annnnnnd.....just what is the difference between a field and a manicured lawn? Regarding being used for generations? What were these yards before except just some plain ole ground which Benjamin Franklin once rode his horse across on his way back to Philly, dropping his change purse whilst galloping along. ;)

Lol, I know. My oldest post colonial coin was found in the yard of a 1940's/50's house. I knew there had been a settler just across the fields from this yard that was burned out by Indians. The owner gave me the old " Sure, go ahead, but I don't know what you'd find". His face was priceless when I showed him what I found, and asked him " What was it before it was the yard of a 1940's/50's house?"

You are right, you never know where you might find anything,I mean, all ground is as old as dirt:)But I think it is harder to get to the older stuff in a "modern yard,or park,or anyplace that has been heavily overlaid by modern occupancy.Don't get me wrong there is some nice stuff to be found in places like that, just harder to get to the older stuff if that's what you are after.Plus older doesn't always mean nicer or more value, exspeacially in the coin world.Personally I like places that haven't been heavily occupied for at least 100 years. But I will hunt anywhere, you never know what is to be found anywhere!

Priceless! You never know where you will be lead!
It is in the hunt not so much the recovery but you were blessed!
Dirt is old and treasure is where you find it! Congrats !
Awesome!
