OK, I tried to dump a box of dimes (only $250) in clear plastic wraps at a Wells Fargo in San Jose.. I don't go there often but was there for a one day job. I had a feeling that this bank was going to be advesarial.

History: I recalled months ago I brought in $5.00 in pennies in clear plastic wraps to swap for a $5.00 bill. I found it unusual that the teller would pull them out of the rubberband and examine each roll. They were in clear plastic.. it's not like I put a block of cheese in there. Based on this, I knew this was going to be a problem bank for dumping.

So as I thought, the teller and the teller supervisor would not allow me to do it. They said I had to deposit and wait for it to clear before they can give me cash which would take a few days. It doesn't make sense to me since other branches of this Wells Fargo are fine with dumping. Many will put them in bags to be sent off for counting while giving me cash. They have my account number and address so what's the big deal? If it's off, they can make adjustments to the account. Apparently this bank doesn't see it that way. One of the tellers told me that this branch is very strict and seemed to understand where my view.

So, the head teller asked the branch Manager (Michael Lee) and the guy said no. I had a discussion with him about it. He didn't care. He said "well what if you closed your account? after depositing?" I said why would I do that? You guys have my address, call the police if there's an issue. He didn't seem to care, and said "what if you put in tokens"? I said they're in clear plastic wraps.. you can tell there's no tokens. He then said "what if the coins looked like dimes on the outside but are not dimes"? I said that it's not possible.. foreign coins have completely different rims. This guy thought he knew better. Real letter of the law guy. He was also filling out paper work for other things while talking to me. It was rude. You don't fill out other paperwork and not look at the customer while talking. Michael Lee is Asian and has an accent. My guess is that he is Chinese and perhaps doesn't understand the culture here. Some Chinese people from over there are strict as hell.

I just didn't get why this guy was so advesarial about it. So I called Wells Fargo and filed a complaint about Michael Lee having poor customer service. His gestures and filling out other work while talking to me. Even the guy on the phone thought it was common for them to take in coins for exchange but didn't know what the official policy was. This is the first time I filed a complaint on a bank. No problem for me. Lee knew I was going to complain about him too as I had told him. He could've been more friendly and apologetic about it and I probably wouldn't have called to complain.

My question is: Should I go back sometime in the future to try it again? Perhaps a smaller load of dimes? Say $100? Just to see if they changed. If not, I could just call back and call again to complain. I figure if I go there enough and they turn me down in exchanging coins, I can just keep calling to complain about the Manager. I wonder if it would change their policy. Who wants complaints on their record?

By the way.. for all you other CRHers in San Jose, it's the Silver Creek branch. Go there and try to exchange some dumps for cash. See what they say. If they give you a hard time, call Wells Fargo and complain.

CRHers unite!! LOL

Call the district manager... Don't just let the issue die until next time.

Does Wells in that area get their dimes in plastic or paper wraps? I've wondered about dumping plastic wrapped dimes at a bank that gets their dimes paper wrapped.

next time tell them you want a Box of Halves
& you'll pay them after your sure they are real & Complete :icon_pirat:

All Wells Fargo banks here have coins in plastic wrappers.. you don't over there?

The ones I got were from another Wells Bank and I was dumping there. At many banks that were fine with dumping.. they end up either using them or ship them out.

I called and complained. The guy on the phone was typing it up and I guess he's gonna submit it somewhere. I didn't ask for a district manager but I guess it would be good to get some type of official policy on it. Something documented is okay for now. I figure that I might try it again in a month. If the guy is still being a jerk about something dumb like this, I'll call to ask the district manager. The key is to document their attitude. The manager may tell them that he was following his own policy but ultimately a complaint about behavior or lack of customer service attitude goes a long ways.

What's ridiculous is that boxes of coins have been short or had foreign coins or tokens in them coming from their own sorting facilities. Dimes are notorious for being inaccurrate. My boxes I turn in are all accurate using the scale.

Ha, same thing happened to me this week when I attempt to dump at my bank, REGIONS bank. I've been using 3 Regions as my dump bank for about 6 months.
Up til Monday, all three bank has been telling me the same thing, which they 'll have to unwrap all the rolled coins that I brought in, and send it out for them to get counted, and it'll take 7-10 business days....WTF?? ( FYI , I've never bring in more than $200 total each time )
I asked them when did they change the policy, because up until then , I was be able to get either cash, or have the money deposit in my account, and I can withdraw them right away. The teller told me they changed the policy because of me!!!! WTF again... " And we want to make sure that you not bringing in FAKE coin..." Wow, why in the heck would I try cashing in some fake coin, at the bank that I've been banking with for the past 5 years?
Then I proceeded to get to my other dump bank, so I can have them coin cash in. Well , needless to say, both other dump bank told me the same thing, pretty much told me to F off.......

I hope the OP will be completely honest with us as to the result of him filing his "complaint". I would be willing to bet the result will not be what he expects.

Hope there are plenty of other dump banks in the area.

Jim

Go in, take his business card, then call and file another complaint while in the bank.

Jim, you don't have to speak to me in the third person. I'm here and willing to answer questions.

I did ask the guy on the phone what they would do about it.. he said he's just documenting it and sending it in to be looked at. Don't know who is going to read it. They may not do anything but that's why it's important to note the manager's attitude toward the customer. It's not just about policy. I know they're documenting it since I can hear the guy typing on the phone. I gave them my phone number in case they need to get in contact with me. That was the extent of it. The manager may be able to defend himself and not do anything. That's where I may go back with $100 in dimes and see what happens. If I get another attitude, I'll call in again. Let the manager answer to it again. It'll be more of a headache for him than me.

I will say that this branch is in the minority of Wells Fargo branches.. most are friendly and customer service oriented.

I have the guy's business card.. I don't think it would matter to call and complain while there. He did know that I was going to call about it because I asked for his card and a phone number to call in.

How often did you dump there? I usually spread it around. I don't like to overwhelm banks. This was one out of my normal area.

If it was in paper wraps.. I would understand their position but they're in plastic clear wraps. I was dumping dimes so it's lower denomination. No one would create counterfeit dimes. LOL

A lot of times, they think they change policy on you, they can get rid of you. There's nothing wrong with fighting back. It's fairly easy to file a complaint about it.

i've gotten rolls but never tried to dump in that branch. i may give it a whirl and see what happens. if i get any guff i may just turn the place into a coinlok bag drop spot.

Why would you ever go back in there? You've been there twice, and twice you haven't gotten the service that you felt you deserved either time. I feel that you probably went back the 2nd time looking for a fight. If you go back a 3rd time, you're definitely just trying to cause problems. Trying to entice others into that bank to dump rolled coin is the same thing. You're just trying to cause problems for the bank as you know whats going to happen.

My question is why all the drama? You felt that the manager disrespected you. I don't necessarily agree or disagree, but I feel you did the same if not worse to him by posting his name on the internet, not to mention trying to get other CRHers to go to his bank to cause problems for him. Thats a bit over the top isn't it?

You felt you were mistreated, so you filed a complaint. That's fine. I would do the same if I felt that I was mistreated. (Personally, I don't see where you were mistreated or at least where complaint-worthy mistreatment occurred. All I see that happened was that basically you were not allowed to get your way.) But, that should be the end of it. You avoid that bank, the manager gets repremanded if his superiors agree with you and feel he was in the wrong. End of story.

I have a feeling you have access to plenty of dump banks. Why not just mark this one off the list, and go on about your business? Why is it so important to go looking for trouble when it can be avoided so easily?

You are correct in that I was looking to pick a fight with the branch although I never tried to dump there until that day. The previous time, I only swapped for $5 in pennies. From the employee there saying that they are strict.. doesn't seem like the employee likes it there either. I don't personally like management like that. It's up to other CRHers what they want to do. However, I feel as though I need to be on a mission to set one bank straight. It still does seem unreasonable to me that they did not allow exchange for coins even though they have my account and address like other branches. It's obvious that I'm not trying to rip them off. There are places where management are not cool. I wanted to send a message.

Well said Arkie.

I have to say that in my opinion people like SF Bay and others who behave in such ways (filing "complaints" when they don't get their way) will do more damage to the future of CRHing than 10 goofballs who buy rolls, search them in their car in the parking lot, and then immediately go back inside to cash them in, much to the tellers' dismay.

These bank workers are basically a CRHer's free employees in said CRHer's quest for silver. Whether it is buying boxes for them or accepting their dumps. Open a small savings account and you can have it all for free.

It boggles my mind that some don't understand the above paragraph. Instead of using the banks' free services without making waves, they want to raise he!! when they see a silver dime in the till and cannot have it, or when they don't agree with the bank's policies. Yes, they might get a small victory here and there. But once these banks change their policies that basically put an end to CRHing it will be too late. And trust me, these banks are not going to deal with these types of issues for long if it creates a disturbance at their branches. They will figure out for the most part CRHer customers cost them money in the long run, especially those doing large volumes.

I don't CRH much anymore because my area is so over hunted, so it would not bother me if the banks shut down CRHing altogether. But I would hate to see it end for those who enjoy it and have good areas to search.

Quote for the day from ancient Japan: "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down." Much wisdom there.

It's the one behind Evergreen college.. not the one further up the street on San Felipe.. they're nicer over there.

@Jim

Why are you equating me with people who pick up and search in my car and returning them back to the same bank? I have never done that. Banks that are cool with it are rewarded. I have even given gifts to my dump banks besides order banks. I don't overburden them either. I don't go to the same one all the time.

This has nothing to do with the tellers. They're just following orders. It's not like some manager is always right and the word of God and so they may not listen to him. Hopefully, upper management will look at it and make a decision for what is reasonable and that is my hope. It may benefit future CRHers. WHo knows. You're just speculating. It could be good or bad depending on who makes the decision.

Why doesn't this guy just let up a bit? What's the big deal about some dimes being exchanged? They have my address and account number. No, I'm not exploiting the system.

Jim, it is a bank. They're supposed to exchange money for customers. What do you expect them to do with coins people bring in? Some people do a lot more.. some people will dump 5 k in coinage.. it was only $250 box of dimes dude.. LOL
That's not unreasonable.

If It's a bank that I don't have an accout with, I just blow it off and go to the next. If It's another branch where I do have an account, then I get REAL testy. Haven't had to yet, most people are generally nice.

You said they would take your dumps, but not give you instant credit for the amount. So they did not refuse your coins. Some banks here have the same policy, some don't. I am sure they are not going to change their policy because you don't agree with it.

I believe you were not trying to rip off the bank, but you would be surprised how many crooks out there try to pull stuff at banks. Even if it is just getting a few extra $$$ out of an under count of dumped rolls.

If the bank said "get out of here we don't like the way you look" or they took someone else's dumps but refused yours, then you would have a good complaint. But just because you don't like their policy and feel it is unnecessary will result in the bank finding you are the problem, not them. Sorry to be blunt but that is how I see it. Let us know how the complaint works out.

Yes, there are crooks out there but again they have my info: address, account number, or DL. Doesn't make sense that I would rip them off if they have all my info.

Why is it that I am the problem? It's not much different than some old lady exchanging coins. So what? I've bought items at Costco with rolls of coins. They just write my Costco account number on the rolls if they have any problems. AGAIN
THEY HAVE MY INFO. What difference does it make?
