Today I found an old coin about 5 inches down, and I'm super happy because it's definitely old, but in such bad condition that I can't figure out what it might be. It is 1 and 1/8 inches in diameter, and only the faintest shadow of a figure is visible on one side... I don't have a scale but it feels pleasantly heavy.

I was so thrilled when I found it, I feel sure it's the oldest coin I've found so far. (Before today my oldest coins were some Indian Head pennies from the 1890's.)

I don't remember what it was possessed me to buy a metal detector earlier this summer, but I'm glad I did. You all said it was addicting... it is. IMG_20150911_153937.jpg

Hook, line, and sinker!!! Congrats

Looks like a KGII or III penny or farthing. A pic of the other side could be helpful if there is any bit of an outline of a bust. Great find, congrats!

I've been browsing around looking for what it might have been, and this Vermont Copper has the same outline. It would make sense since I'm very close to Vt. Both her arms are in the right place and the outline matches. And I can see the faint remnants of large letters on this coin too.

Here's a pic of the reverse, I can't make anything out though. And the reverse of the Vermont Copper, for comparison.

ongrats on pulling that old coin. :occasion14: Finds like that feed the fire. Welcome to the obsession.:hello2:

Would love to find a coin that old, congrats to you.

Hi - Follow the cleaning advice I posted in this thread and post close-ups of the coin. Your pics are a bit too far away. Zoom in to fill the frame with the cleaned coin.

Good idea, I see what you mean. I will take some close ups after I try the cleaning techniques, then post back, thanks for the tips.
Hopefully, a bit of detail shows.

I think the second pic is upside down, no? Looks like a right facing bust? I swear I see a hair ribbon.

It was upside down. I hope you don't mind that I righted it for you. Very nice old copper. Good luck cleaning it.
I'm wondering if maybe it is a KG3?

Wow, thanks for righting the photo, I can almost see a bust there now. I hope that careful cleaning will reveal some details. I'd love to know for sure what it is.
