I showed my wife woody's fantastic tin toy collection this morning. That was a brilliant move on my part, as once again it has allowed me to dig up my wife's flower garden! I've dug another pit 4' by 8' near the old well. I scraped it several inches at a time, (finally going down 20" inches to the last layer of debris), detected using a 6" coil, and then sifted each layer. In the first four feet near the well I found nothing but broken pottery shards, two pipe stems, animal teeth, and a partial pipe bowl. In the next four feet I just popped these two out, an 1798 and a large coat button. I haven't checked the back yet for wreath style, as I was too happy to have finally pulled something new out of this worked out place of mine. Thanks for looking. (remember to show your wives Woody's stuff!)

Why would you need permission from the wife? Tell her that history needs to be saved.

kirk, if I don't ask permission I'll BE history!

1898 or 1798? Am I looking at a draped bust or are my eyes playing tricks on me?
yeah Wallhangers I think he missed type it's 1798 I see the samething as you! btw is there any way you can enlarge the pic so I can see the detail on the 1798 penny?

Ha! yes, I mis-typed it. It's the first hair variety. The back shows a double leaf on the top right. I don't have the right book around here; is the double leaf the 1796 back? Thanks.

Wow that has awesome detail!! can you please post a nice big pic of back of the 1798? Closer look at this it appears you may have the 1798 over 7 variety..check very closely with mag or post very close clear pic of the date..thanks

Thanks creeper. I think it may be an 8 over 7 also, as there is a high part in the left upper corner of the 8. Unfortunately I don't know how to blow it up more, but I'll find out. here's a scan of the verso. It is still a little rough as I haven't tried to clean it yet.

From the picture you can see it is an 8 over 7. Would be able to see it better with a higher resolution picture though.

Nice find!

I wouldn't try to clean this one..just soak it in Distilled water as Don from SJ usually recommends to do to stop any corrosion... have you ever seen him write about this method? I also think it's a 8 over 7 as the 9 has the dot at the very bottom of the loop an I saw what appeared to be a dot at the left side of the top of the 8...

Thanks guys, and thanks for the link Don, which I'll save for reference in the future. The coin didn't go off as well as I'd hoped with my wife tonight. If I'd found a tin child's toy I would no doubt have blanket permission to dig up the whole yard. Now I have to milk the remaining four feet of my pit for as long as I can!

To get a woman's attention they like money figures so let her know your coin is worth between 800.00 fine to 8000.00 extra fine 45 I am still learning grades.. I I beleive it may be au but being dug you drop it one grade to extra fine...maybe someone more qualified with grading can say a actual grade...
