I should be out digging in about 2 weeks. Last Mar. 11 I posted finds from my first hunt of 2013! I couldn't remember when I first got out so I looked back, although this stupid weather this year seems abit colder and the ground seems to be way too rock hard frozen still, Im hoping for a quick thaw
With you there my friend! But here in Maine it's not looking too good for a bit longer. The cold just won't let go.

Well, you made me look up my first hunt. Feb 27 for me. Doesn't look like I will be making it that early this year. I remember there was frost in the ground in the shaded areas last year. There's still inches of snow in the bright sunny areas THIS year:BangHead:

Sending you all some sunshine from FL hope it warms up soon for all you that live in the ice box GL and HH in the mean time just get all the equipment ready

Thanks Junker, but you must have sent the wrong thing! It just started snowing huge flakes again here.

Yep, this winter has been overdue. I've been pretty well spoiled over the first few years of getting back into this hobby. A couple things this reminded me of was how, (when I got started back in the 70's), the ground was sooo frozen, for sooo long! I had to get smarter about where I hunted or just sit until full Spring. :)

I learned that the sand at fresh water beaches freeze more solid than rock!
Also that no matter how much I wanted to dig, nothing I could do!
Still, where there's a will...and all that. I also learned that even though the beach froze, if there was free water, the bottom didn't.
Also, some wooded areas and spots with usually very deep weeds in the summer, tended to be a bit more accessible.
Heavy pine needles seemed good. Deep leaves too.
Also, I looked for spots that thawed first. Tops of hills, areas that had southern exposure for the longest time during the day and sometimes, the spots where warmer water runs off parking lots can help.

Of course, when it's ALL frozen, the only thing is to wait. But, there are places where digging is feasible, just gotta get smart about it, (maybe a dirt basement floor?) . LOL

Finger's crossed, soon, soon.

No letup here in Montana. -10 last night and another foot on the way tomorrow....???

:sunny::sunny::sunny::icon_sunny::icon_sunny::icon_sunny::icon_sunny::icon_sunny::icon_sunny::icon_sunny::icon_sunny::icon_sunny::sunny::sunny::sunny: While you guys are waiting for spring thaw, I like WHADIFIND's idea of digging dirt basements up there! If you're acquainted with folks who own the biggest old houses in your area, this joke idea could prove fruitful digging! Great-grandma may have had a jar or two of coins buried under her canned goods shelving units, a little nest egg great-grandpa never was aware of, lol. One of my great-grandpas & his dad built a big family house years ago in their New Hampshire town, no longer owned by our family, but I've daydreamed about checking out that basement someday. :laughing7: :icon_thumright:

Here in central coastal CA, a predicted 3-day rain is just starting, which we desperately need as this past year in CA & the southwest was the worst drought year in 100 years! And it followed two other consecutive drought years. Bad for agriculture & wilderness animals. Boon for us swinging detectors though. Adios! :cat: Andi

Oh that wasn't a "joke" idea. I was very serious about that. :) Just never know.

About that drought, could you use a couple miles of snow? Cheap? LOL

This mornings forecast calls for another 6 to 12 inches and way below average temps into mid next week, I will not be participating in any early march detecting this year. Darnit,........

It's a balmy 6 degrees here in Maine this morning. Really really tired of this cold and snow!

Well we have a heat blast of 8 this morning below freezing temps all week with 6+ inches of snow Monday, on top of what is still sitting on the frozen tundra!

If I get my equipment ready any more, I'm gonna wear the paint right off! Lol!

I did find a quarter MD'ing a snow pile!
