It appears this was a metal box, hinged on one edge. It is non-ferrous and 2 inches by 1.5 inches and maybe 3/8ths of an inch deep. It was found on our family farm near Ottawa, KS. The farm was established in 1872 and has been in my family since 1913. Other than being smashed flat it appears to be generally intact. My guess was snuff box but I've never come across one before and was hoping someone here could help. Thanks in advance.

Welcome Jeff, Nice find! I think you're probably right and I'd have tested for silver.

Saw something similar used for loose tobacco and rolled you own.

Welcome to TNet Jeff!

Nice find:icon_thumleft:
I think what you have is the bottom half of a "vesta" pocket match safe. The majority of these were usually made in brass with decorative accents but some were made from sterling silver.

If it has a hinge on the side it's not a match safe as explained above. Is it a hinge, or just a seam? Clearly made of brass. Welcome aboard.

On closer inspection I think it is a seam and not a hinge so the match safe makes the most sense. Thank you all. I appreciate the feedback.
