I usually don't find much at these military sites from the 1860s, but today was pretty good. Seated dime is an 1851. I think the cartridge is a .56-56.

That's some early stuff for Idaho! I bet that epaullette rang out good! I wonder why the trooper who "lost" it didn't think the opposition in the area would be wielding cavalry sabers?

If there is brass the size of that epaulette still in the ground, there could be a plate lurking about.
Looks like a Spencer casing perhaps.

I've found about a dozen epaulettes, including one that's complete with the scales. Never found a plate or buckle though.....not for lack of trying! Thanks for the comment.
