Finally got out today after a few weeks trapped inside, my wife insisted that I get out before I drive her crazy!! Lol I was digging only high tones on my D2 due to the ground was still frozen a few inches down. This is a new permission that I received before the weather went to crap! 2 wheats a war nickel and to my surprise what I'm thinking is a civil war period sword hanger, the copper to the left is a cut copper I'm thinking, this site was occupied for many years. The ground should finish thawing in the next couple of days and I'm headed back and digging the low and mid tones that I past on due to conditions.

I may be mistaken but I don't think there were any snake sword hangers, that looks to be the snake part of a snake buckle. I think they were given to the confederates by the British during the civil war. Great find!
I wasn't sure of its purpose! So I thank you for your input. I know someone on here will identify it for me!

Awesome snake buckle. They were used a lot over many years. You might be able to figure out how old this one is from the design. There are many different types. Not all were used in the Civil War but most are British made as far as I know.

Love that buckle!

These are tough to id they still used them on navy cadets up until a few years ago. They were used on early 20th C Police uniforms etc. There are 15th C examples & they fell out of fashion in the 17th C & came back again in the 18th C. Tough to date, but yours looks early 20th C to me.

Thanks the site that it was recovered from is mid 1800s I believe , glass shards and pottery date to this period!

Sure but you need a proper ID on the buckle, not on the Site. Unless the associated finds were in a sealed archaeological layer with the buckle? Don't fall in to the age old trap of associating all the others finds with the buckle, unless the buckle IS dated to that period.
Those items mentioned are just clues to a puzzle, but you could have several puzzles.

I agree with your comments, the snake buckle piece was but a few inches down! I dug wheat pennies on this site that were 10" down, this farm has been worked for a 100 plus years! Thank you !
