Found this at a union encampment saturday. Its a bullet thats ben smashed but it has a brass ?something in it. A close look shows the brass was actually folded over to form a C, it also has a center pc. that folded into the lead. I suppose off an accoutrement of some sort? Brass shows no corrosion that is normally found on brass in this area. Maybe because of being with the lead bullet? Thks for looking, DN's

The embedded brass object appears to be a kepi (hat) strap-adjuster buckle, folded over onto itself, with its center bar broken loose at one end and folded over in the same direction.

Your finds would indicate a campsite. Soldiers did some fun stuff in camp. I think you have a bullet that was carved and then heated and attached the buckle that CBG described above.

Funny! I just said the exact same thing in the today's finds post. Came over here to see what others thought and it looks like we made the same conclusion. Looks like a Kepi buckle right down to the rounded corners... someone was bored in camp!

Thks guys, If these buckles were made of thin brass & more for looks over function I believe ya'll nailed it! We've found lots of carved lead, etc. that shows soldiers were bored in this camp. dn's

Here's a stamped brass Kepi buckle I dug with a penny for size reference. I believe they were used to tighten the Kepi to make it fit more snug. Maybe a member who knows more can comment more on that.
