Met up with Twistidd, Watercolor, Kimsdad and Des Plaines Silver Bob for a hunt in the woods on Saturday.
Everyone came away with something after a long hunt in some tough conditions.

The digging ranged from perfect to rock hard, and there were some targets I was never able to retrieve due to the frozen ground. Good repeatable signals were few and far between, but we spent around 5 + hours searching for a winner anyway.

After around an hour I wandered over to a piece of high ground close to the river that looked like it might have been a perfect place to picnic. Within a few minutes I received the only signal that I felt for sure was a coin.

I dug a plug and flipped it out of the ground and saw the small silver edge and I thought pull tab. Then I looked a little closer and noticed a reeded edge. I broke the plug open and saw the smallest silver coin I ever found.

It turned out to be a 1919 Canadian half dime in good condition. The only other find I made was a clad nickel towards the end of the day.

Was it worth it to me hunting almost 6 hours in 30 degree temps for that little coin? You betcha!

Thanks for looking!
Mike

PS. The half dime is on top of a merc to give you a sense of scale.

Like I told you yesterday, the coolest silver coin I've seen come out of the ground in a while (even though it IS Canadian)!

Nice job. I didn't want to stress the hand too much, I wasn't in any pain but I didn't want to get to that point either. That's why I left early. All I got out of that hunt was a crisp 1920 wheatie, the rocking horse Cracker Jack toy, and also a smashed lead bullet, which I didn't show you because I didn't know what it was until I got home. It's interesting, I'll scan it later to see if anyone here knows anything about it.

Congratulations again on that tiny foreign silver!

Joe

p.s. Sorry I missed you, kimsdad. I felt my inner conscience calling and didn't want to push it. How'd you do in the woods??

Sounds like a good day guys!!!

Beats the heck out of the Gorgeous George halfer I found last summer. Mine was wafer thin and only the barest parts of the crowns could be made out.

Congratulations Mikewaz. Great coin. You guys are hardcore to be out hacking away at the ground. I don't even think the planet Hoth could stop you guys from metal detecting. Makes me want to buy a rock hunting chisel and get out there.

Dealing with the cold weather wasn't as bad as trying to dig anything up. Some areas were not too bad while he majority I ran into was like trying to slice through a brick. A lot of the areas we hunted were lowland, so they held a lot of moisture, water, snow and ice. The week before was perfect digging.

Pocket Spill, any time we go out you're more than welcomed to join the madness. :tard: Plus I'd like to see that F70 in action.

Hey Mike, it was good to finally meet ya!

Congrats on that cool little coin.   Until I started reading the forum, I never knew a half dime even existed. Now I want one so badly... ;D I can't believe how small and thin they are. It looks much smaller when you hold it in your hand than it does even on top of the Merc. Coincidentally, that wheatie I found was a 1919.

Sorry I had to work in the morning and miss Joe & Bob!
Neil

Hi Neil,
I'm glad I finally got to meet you and Bob. It looks like were going into a deep freeze for a while, so I don't think the grounds
gonna get any softer for a while. That means we're all gonna have to meet up and toss a few and tell some tall tales. ;D
Mike

Mike, the condition on that Half-Dime is wonderful! It's amazing how tiny it really is.

We'll have to get the gang back out there along that spot when the river settles down. . . got to be more

Take care,
Mark

Mike it was nice meeting you.
Congrats on that half dime. That thing is so small.
After I left, I went down to that house I saw and got permission to hunt the property in the spring. ( LARGE AREA )
The guy gave me permission right off the bat. I spent an hour there talking to him. Asked if it was ok to have other guys.
He said no problem..

Next nice day we can all go out and try that area I was telling you about in the woods

Congrats again...... Bob

That's one sweet coin!
I though I dug one yesterday also until it split in two. I guess I'll have to go clean out my pouch and find out just what is really is.

About the same size as the us half dime. I found one of those and boy they are small. Almost lost it in the hole :D
