Oldhunter, I'm changing my opinion a little. It is very different in yet another way (besides small differences in the leaves and hook) from the 1850 militia buckles listed in Kerksis. Your buckle was cast, as the other similar one was stamped brass. Your buckle is not in Kerksis (1795-1874). Can't wait until kugar, ironman, and and some of the others chime in.
 

Thanks guys...there are 8 stars and the words Plurbius Unum above the eagle. There is still some gold gild ( gilt ? ) left on the buckle too..On the back there are the remains of two posts opposite the larger clasp looking part. This was dug at 1 inch...just below the surface and what a surprise it was..The old school is no longer there and this was found at what would have been the rear of the building . Thanks Underdogger for helping me with the pics and getting this on the forum today. Much appreciated. Jimmy
