The size of these tools make me wonder if they are all exhausted larger scrapers, made to fit the hand that used them, or fit a specific task. This is an older pic, and I think I have some even smaller now. That's a silver dollar they are on.

Anyone else have any tiny thumb scrapers?

i have one just like your top one,mr larson sent it too me.i find some from around my area and post them when i get a chance.

I have a few. I'll see if I can get some pictures and post them later. I too always wondered what such a small Tool could have been used for.

quito, those are small.

Here are few of my small scrapers? These were found in an historic camp which has lead me to believe that they are NA made gun flints. But there is other cultural occupational present, so I cant say with certainty.

Here is a few of the ones I have, I have others I have found in our area. I bought these in a bucket of rocks that I was going to polish and realized there was scrapers ever where in the rocks. I took them out and put them in a case. The person I bought them from said they were from out west.

from what I have seen and heard, them gunflints are much harder to come by than the thumb scrapers. Ill be looking at mine now with a different perspective.

Quito, nice to see some South Dakota Artifacts. I assume you are West River. do you see any quartzite items. I think that they are scrapers since there are so many around and many beautiful translucent ones.

LOL, no, I am east of that River. Heck I am even east of the Big Sioux River, outside of Sioux Falls. Those were all found along the Sioux River. We do find some Knife River Flint over here too. Lots of quartzite over here, but not much comes from the west.

Them scrapers are from Cherry Rock Farm just south of Husets Speedway.

Very Cool I love the history of our area. The Island of quartzite we live on has so much to be discovered having been here intact for 1.6 billion years. Would love to see what you have discovered!

This is my only small uniface thumb scraper. I have always wondered if it is a gun flint. It has scuffs in the middle of the flat side. Thanks for any info! It seems a little large maybe.

Hmm, it could be but this one looks more like a thumb scraper. Here is some factors for those that I am showing, and even with that, I would not call them flints with certainty. These all have a tapered back, but that could also be used for hafting. They all have some what a straight beveled edge(not rounded). More surface area to hit the striking plate. Found in campsites that have gun parts and trade items. Trade Items relate to these flint lock guns. ( but as stated multi occupational use of other time periods) When I look at most scrapers is the rounded beveled edge. What I see with the fine artifact your showing is no taper and a small dip above the bevel.

Well maybe we can do that some day. I'll be at Corson shortly if you are out and about, stop in.

My smallest ever found
