Hey all,
One of my new years goals was to be active on this/these forums. I was a lurker for such a long time, and felt like it was time to start sharing. Here it goes:
Small 54 gram score. Not sure of the fineness. Has some cool hallmarks - one on the bottom and a double back to back on the inside/outside of the rim. $3.99 + tax. Yay - its still out there! Thanks for looking!

That's a nice little piece and for sure it's solid silver imo. There are websites devoted to silver marks that can help you out with the questions you have about origin, purity and age, but there is Red Coat a member that lives in this room with a lot of reference to information you'll never find on the world wide web 🌐

Thanks, Tamrock!
WOW! What a BEAUTIFUL library!! I don't think I'd leave that room either!
l'll spend some time trying to get a better idea of what the hallmarks really look like. I thought the double-sided one on the rim was pretty neat. The light in my house is pretty poor after dark, so the photos I was able to get last night were definitely sub-par. Doing the post purchase research is one of my most favorite parts of finding neat stuff!

Much better photos in the daylight!!
The first two are back to back on the rim, almost like they were pressed with a clamp... The PL is on the bottom. I'll let you all know if I find something!

Great find... especially at that price!

Yes, Tamrock is correct. Your beaker has the French “Minerve casquée" (Minerva, helmeted) mark for French silver, used from 19th May 1838 (until 1973). There are two versions… the one on the left was for 950 fine silver and the one on the right was for 800 fine. Yours is the former, to the higher fineness.

Minerve.jpg

The maker mark of ‘PL’ around a goblet with stars above and below is for Pellerin & Lemoing, established by Scipion Pellerin and Louis Lemoing at 40 rue de Montmorency, Paris in 1866.

It’s late 19th Century and what is known as a “boarder’s cup” (sometimes improperly described as a “baby beaker”). These were traditionally used by students sent away to a boarding school and particularly by those from wealthy families. Often they have the name or initials of the user engraved on them. They were also sold as city souvenirs, again often engraved as such.

PS: Welcome to Tnet.

Nice library Tamrock... although a bit small. I find the books up at the top of mine keep falling down, although I only have my shelf to blame.
